The Early Years

A pioneering spirit, planted in

Ontario soil.

Greenhorizons' vision for a greener, more sustainable community dates back over 200 years, when the Schiedel family's ancestors journeyed by horse and buggy from Pennsylvania to Canada in search of new opportunity on rich Southern Ontario soil.

Generations later, that same pioneering spirit evolved from dairy and grain farming into what would eventually become one of Ontario's leading sod and natural turf operations.

A family that came in search of good land — and spent the next two centuries improving it.

50 Years Supplying Sod

A family farming operation built into

an Ontario institution.

In 1975, Richard and Shirley Schiedel, alongside their two sons Ronald and Steven, officially formed The Greenhorizons Group of Farms Ltd®. What began as a family farming operation that has grown into a network of sod farms and distribution locations across Southern Ontario, including Cambridge, Hamilton, London, Oakville/Mississauga, and specialty natural turf operations in Burford, Ontario.

As the next generation stepped into leadership roles, Ron Schiedel, along with Steve and Christine Schiedel, helped lead the continued growth and expansion of the family business. Together, they played a key role in transforming Greenhorizons into one of Ontario’s leading sod and natural turf companies. Their leadership helped shape the company’s culture, day-to-day operations, and strong family-first values, guiding Greenhorizons into a new era focused on innovation, customer service, environmental stewardship, and long-term growth.

Today, Greenhorizons farms over 6000 acres, with 4,000 acres dedicated to natural turf grass production, taking advantage of Southern Ontario's diverse soil types and microclimates to deliver premium natural turf solutions.

Tradition Lives On

Fourth generation — and deeply rooted.

Today, Greenhorizons proudly continues as a fourth-generation family business. Michael Schiedel now helps lead the company forward, carrying on the family's passion for natural green spaces, premium turf products, and strong customer relationships.

Alongside his wife Taylor and their children Dakota and Gracie, the next generation of the Schiedel family is already deeply rooted in the values that have helped define Greenhorizons for over 50 years.

The same values that brought the Schiedel family to Ontario — hard work, stewardship, and community — are the same ones guiding the fourth generation today.
